What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are distributed in all tissues of the body and accompany us throughout life, although as we age or get sick they lose vitality. They exhibit unique characteristics, which confer their immense therapeutic potential.
First, they can multiply indefinitely, retaining their stem cell status; secondly, under appropriate stimuli they can differentiate into mature cells of different organs; thirdly, they may be distributed throughout the body in a targeted manner, taking into account the biochemical signals coming from the diseased tissues.
How Do Stem Cells Act?
These cells perform their therapeutic functions through four basic mechanisms:
